The basis of the scheme was to grow vegetables for use in the two military hospitals in Toowoomba, as well as for the civilian hospitals. Club member, Arthur Collins, allowed the use of his backyard in Margaret Street and of course, manpower was supplied by Rotarians.
The various hospitals benefited greatly from the prodigious amount of vegetables harvested from the garden. The scheme continued throughout the war years.
With 5,000 onion plants being planted in one working bee and in another, 500 cabbages and cauliflower plants, as well as carrots and bean seeds, some idea can be gauged of the amount of work that was involved.
