The club’s Hamburger House at the Toowoomba Showgrounds was completely demolished four weeks before the Show. The building was hit by a runaway road train. The driver managed to jump clear, but a passenger was killed. The building and most of the contents were completely wrecked.

Whilst temporary facilities were provided for the 1988 Show, it was not until March 1990 before the Burgerhouse was rebuilt. With the enlarged space and improved layout, the new building proved to be most effective. The main cost of rebuilding was covered by the insurance payout, however the Rotaryannes made a generous donation of $600 towards interior furnishings. $10,563 profit was made in that year, in addition to the $7,940 made for controlling the parking.

Our Rotary club made over $10,000 most years from 1986, when it signed a five-year contract with the Show Society to supervise the parking at the new Toowoomba Showgrounds. The club also undertook to operate a barbecue site on the grounds over the period of the show. In 1986-87 we erected a building on an area of the Rotary Family Park, as a home for our barbecue equipment. But that original building was destroyed by the road train.
